SESSIONS OUTLINE

DAY 1
Scoping + Pre – Production
Executive Producer – Chris Chaundler QB/Twickenham Studios)

From workflow to budgeting, everything you need to know about planning a VP shoot

Everything a producer needs to understand when doing feasibility and scoping of a Virtual Production project. From different asset and screen options to balancing up the physical versus Virtual art department. There’s a number of variables which will impact the workflow, your timings and your budget. We will guide you through the different stages of development, pre-production and pre-visualisation, to ensure your shoot runs as smoothly as possible. We’ll cover a range of different scenarios, looking at good and bad case studies to help identify efficiencies and also ‘watch outs.

DAY 2
VFX Supervisor
VFX Lead: Quite Brilliant – Russ Shaw

We look at the pro’s and cons of Virtual Production, from a VP/VFX supervisor perspective. Assessing its feasibility at the outset, to building the assets and integrating right real time workflows. We’ll look at the different programs used including Unreal, Assimilate, Disguise and the integration of AI into the workflow. We’ll also look at future technologies and where next for Virtual Production.

DAY 3
LED Technician
Mark Pilborough-Skinner – Head of Virtual Production, Garden Studios

We’ll jump behind the scenes, to show the Real Time workflow in action. We’ll explore the interaction of the Unreal Engine content, the camera tracking system and the LED screen.  We illustrate multiple workflows from 3d assets to 2.5 d and 2d plate playback.  We’ll also dive into the role of the LED technician on set and how they interact with the Camera and lighting departments. They are one of the most integral components of the VP workflow during Pre-Production, Pre-Visualisation and shoot, so understanding  this role is critical for all Heads of Department.

DAY 4
Camera + lighting
Dave Jones – Director of Photography

The magic comes together on the set itself, where traditional filmmaking crosses over with new technology.  What’s captured on set should ideally require minimal post, hence the name ‘In Camera VFX’. In this session we get the DOP’s perspective, ranging from how their role has changed during Pre-Production and Pre-Visualisation stages to what’s required on set. We’ll go through some of the basic rules of shooting VP to the more intricate decisions around camera and lens choices. We‘ll also look at lighting and objectively look at some of the pros and cons of working with LED screens and which environments and conditions are best suited for this technology.

DAY 5
Production Design
Anthony Neale

The Art behind the Production, how the Virtual world blends with the physical world. The role of the Production Designer/Art Director has now become multi-dimensional and never more important.  They will work oversee and integrate a team of VAD artists with more traditional set design roles. How these worlds come together will have an enormous bearing on budget, timings and opverall creative direction. We look a variety of different VP projects which has adopted very different approaches as we talk through the role of Production Designer in the new Virtual Production world.
